Frequently asked questions about Platelet-Rich-Plasma therapy

How does PRP work?

This procedure delivers a concentration of platelets from the patient’s own blood directly to the site of pain and injury, supercharging the body’s own healing properties.

Platelets play a critical role in tissue recovery. Whenever tissue is injured, whether through a sports injury or simple wear and tear, the body naturally sends a rush of platelets to the tissue to kick-start the healing process. A physician mimics the body’s natural reaction to injury by delivering platelet-rich plasma to the affected area in order to stimulate, promote and advance the healing process.

Platelet-rich plasma is created from the patient’s own blood. During the PRP appointment, a medical professional will draw blood and spin it to separate platelets from red blood cells. What’s left after the spinning process is a concentrate of platelets, which is then injected directly into the affected idea.

Which conditions can PRP treat?

PRP injections can be an effective treatment for acute or chronic pain as a result of several common conditions, including:

  • Osteoarthritis of the knee, shoulder, hip and spine
  • Inflammation
  • Torn tendons and ligaments
  • Sports injury
  • Other injuries which did not heal properly

PRP therapy can also be used in cosmetic applications. Click here  to read more about PRP rejuvenation therapy for facials and hair regrowth.

How many times do I need to receive PRP therapy in order for it to take effect?

Treatment plans vary from patient to patient. A personalized treatment plan will be developed after initial consultation with Dr. Tanya Weissman.

What can patients expect when they receive PRP therapy at Comprehensive Rehabilitation and Pain Management?

The PRP therapy procedure generally takes around one hour, including preparation and recovery time. A numbing cream or local anesthetic may be applied to the injection site. Patients can generally transport themselves to and from the procedure.

Are there any side effects?

PRP is a low-risk procedure because it uses the patient’s own blood, with no additional medication aside from a topical or local anesthetic if necessary. Some patients may experience tenderness or soreness at the injection site.
